So apparently it’s possible for a man’s testicles to become so entangled that they die. If that doesn’t already have you cringing in pain, the details of this one particular story will.

According to Men’s Health, an 11-year-old Chinese boy was admitted to the hospital after walking with a painful limp for quite some time. Upon further investigation, it was found that the boy had twisted one testicle 540-degrees, while sleeping, which caused him to lose the testicle. This is a condition called Testicular Torsion, which is a rare occurrence affecting about one in every 4,000 males, and it’s far more likely to happen to males near puberty or significantly older.

The boy had complained about pain for some time, and when doctors operated, they found the testicle was so squeezed, it had slightly burst open at the base. We can’t imagine the pain this poor young fella went through, and we wouldn’t wish this upon even our worst enemies.

“Generally speaking,” Dr. Chen Guangjie, from the Zhejiang University School of Medicine. “Six hours after testicular torsion, patients lose the ability to produce sperm. If the angle of twist is 90-degrees, the testis will die in a week; at 180-degrees, the testis will die in three to four days. If it’s 360-degrees, 12 to 24 hours and if the spermatic cord twist exceeds 720-degrees, the testis will die within two hours.”

So, if you notice any irregular pain, you should probably get it checked out immediately. Unless you want to end up like this poor Chinese kid.
