All signs point to the human race colonizing the planet Mars at sometime in the not-too-distant future. If and when that happens, people are gonna need their beer.

To that end, Budweiser is out to be the hero by creating the first beer brewed specifically for the fourth rock from the sun. According to Adweek, the company announced its plans to research and produce the first microgravity brew at the South by Southwest Interactive conference in Austin, Texas over the weekend.

While beer may not seem that high on the list of things man will need to take with him to Mars, Budweiser vice president Ricardo Marques begs to differ.

“When we can enjoy a few ice-cold Buds on the Red Planet, that will be the moment when we can truly realize our dreams of space colonization,” Marques said.

Among the issues with brewing beers on Mars is the planet has substantially less surface gravity than Earth, which means making a beverage with carbonation will require some problem solving. That’s where Budweiser’s research and development team swoops in to save the day.

Anheuser-Bush VP of marketing Val Toothman is hoping that by being the first, Bud will become the official beers of Mars.

“We know that colonization of Mars could be a decade or two away,” Toothman said. “But we want to make sure that Budweiser is the beer that people are toasting with on Mars when we get there.”
