At Thursday night’s World MMA Awards in Las Vegas, there were a decent amount of not-so-surprising victories: Conor McGregor won Fighter of the Year for the second year in a row, Amanda Nunes won Female Fighter of the Year and Dana White won the award for Leading Man of the Year, an award he’s won every year since the award show’s inception in 2008 (seriously, why do they even have that award?)
But the most skull-crushing award of the night was without a doubt the Knockout of the Year. It went to Michael Page’s brutal flying knee KO of Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos at Bellator 158. The vicious blow ended up fracturing Cyborg’s skull, requiring seven hours of surgery, and ended up playing a major part in his retirement. So yeah, not exactly the most celebratory of awards.
