Okay, as a born-and-bred drummer with 20+ years behind the kit under my belt, I am thoroughly prepared to call bullshit on this piece.
It seems that in a recent study promulgated by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America titled “Superior time perception for lower musical pitch explains why bass-ranged instruments lay down musical rhythms” (all of which is already a nonsensical mouthful), there’s a preponderance of scientific evidence to support why the bass is just so damn necessary in any band or musical ensemble.
Let’s distill this scientific boilerplate to its core, shall we? Per UPROXX:
Basically, the study found that we love bass so much because we’re wired to understand musical time better if it comes from the lower end of the spectrum… This knowledge is pretty well innate to anyone who has ever used the term “rhythm section,” but it’s nice to have science backing it up.
Okay, makes sense enough, right? I guess a bass-ranged tone is relatively necessary if you’re going to form an ensemble. And in recent years, everyone’s been all about that bass, from “Super Bass” to Drum ‘N’ Bass.
But, like, everyone still needs drums and percussion, though, right?
Right?
