Life’s throwing some curve balls at Addison Russell.
His wife Melissa Russell’s discovery of a possible extramarital affair has touched off a Major League Baseball investigation into claims that he physically abused her.
Last month, Melissa, 23, posted a picture of herself on Instagram, which has since been removed, clad in a bikini with the caption: “Being free to be able to make your own choices for your own happiness beats being cheated on, lied to, & disrespected any day.”
A subsequent comment to one of Melissa’s posts from a friend was far more troubling. The now-deleted comment accused Addison of hitting his wife.
“…Melisa didn’t want that out, but I’ll say it. He hit her,” the comment said. “She found condoms in his apartment yesterday…”
Addison Russell, who was not in the Cubs lineup for today’s game against the Rockies after team officials told him not to come to the ballpark Thursday, called the domestic abuse allegations false and hurtful.
“Any allegation I have abused my wife is false and hurtful,” Russell said in a statement issued Thursday afternoon. “For the well-being of my family, I’ll have no further comment.”
