Where else could you catch a Lake Trout that weighs about as much as the average sixth grader but the Northwest Territories of Canada?
Great Bear Lake is where a world record 72-pounder was caught in 1995 and an 83-pounder, which would have shattered the record had it survived, was reeled in by members of the Delinen First Nation community recently while sustenance fishing. Unfortunately, efforts to revive the behemoth reportedly failed.

Plummer’s Arctic Lodge guide Brandon Isaac documented the whole thing on Facebook, and the pictures give you a pretty good sense of just how massive the trout was.
“83 lb lake trout. Blows my mind mind even typing that, as the official world record (with rod and reel) is 72 lbs,” Isaac wrote in his post. “This fish is part of the reason why I love guiding in the arctic. Every morning, every guide launches their boat thinking “today could be the day”. The new world record is cruising around there somewhere. And since we’re a catch & release lodge – the 50 pounder caught 10 years ago is potentially still alive, but 20-30 pounds bigger.”
Sounds like a world record catch is definitely there for the taking.
