Top Gun, one of the coolest movies ever made, is getting a reboot.

Tom Cruise starred in the 1986 fighter pilot flick, and he confirmed its second coming on Australian television morning show Sunrise earlier this week.

“I’m going to start filming it probably in the next year,” Crusie said. “It’s happening. It is definitely happening. You’re the first people that I’ve said this to.”

As you can imagne, the news spread like wildfire on social media and plot ideas were swirling around on Twitter like one gigantic script meeting had been called. But many were only poking fun at the sequel coming about thirty years after the release of the first film.

Rumblings of a Top Gun reprise have been circulating for several years. In 2014, Jerry Bruckheimer, who produced the first film, talked about what the plot of the sequel might look like, but it was clearly dripping with sarcasm.

“The concept is, basically, the pilots are obsolete because of drones,” he quipped. “Cruise is going to show them that they’re not obsolete, that pilots are here to stay.”

Then in 2015, Skydance Productions (who’s producing the sequel) CEO David Ellison gave a serious take on what Top Gun 2 would probably look like.

“When you look at the world of dogfighting, what’s interesting about it is that it’s not a world that exists to the same degree when the original movie came out,” Ellison said. “This world has not been explored. It is very much a world we live in today where it’s drone technology and fifth generation fighters are really what the United States Navy is calling the last man-made fighter that we’re actually going to produce so it’s really exploring the end of an era of dogfighting and fighter pilots and what that culture is today are all fun things that we’re gonna get to dive into in this movie.”

Granted, everyone in the film is a lot older and not as cool-looking as they were in 1986, but the idea of bringing back a true piece of ’80s nostalgia is still pretty exciting. We’re not sure having Kenny Loggins and Loverboy on the soundtrack this time around would be a good idea, though.
