With Memorial Day behind us, summer is in full swing, which means the 4th of July isn’t too far away. And with the celebration of America comes fireworks in abundance. So, wouldn’t it be nice to get an up close and personal look at how the things work? There’s something about those giant shells that soar upwards and blast colors all over the sky.

The folks over at the Beyond Slow Motion YouTube channel haven given us some insight into how the shells explode by showing slo-mo footage of the fireworks in action.
In order to safely show the inner workings of the exploding shell, they took a thin cross-section of a shell and sandwiched it in between two pieces of glass. They did this to allow a high-speed camera to see the fuse burning, and eventually, all of the pyrotechnics inside igniting.
They shot the video at 3,200 frames per second, which provided for some pretty amazing footage. So as the summer moves along and you get out and see some of these shells in action, you’ll have a better understanding of how these things work.
