When used properly, social media can be a wonderful thing. But, when used inappropriately, which unfortunately it often is, social media can be quite damaging. Playboy model Dani Mather is learning this the hard way, as she faces criminal charges for her violating use of Snapchat.

According to NY Daily News, Mather is facing charges for secretly taking a photo of a naked 70-year-old woman in the shower of a Los Angeles gym last year and posting it to Snapchat.
Mathers posted the snap of herself, with the woman in the background, accompanied by this caption: “If I can’t unsee this then you can’t either.”
The former Playmate of the Year was charged with misdemeanor invasion of privacy under a California law, which prohibits the secret recording or photographing of an “identifiable person” in a home, changing room or tanning booth without the subject’s consent, according to NY Daily News.
Mathis filed a motion, claiming the privacy law she was being charged with was too ambiguous. However, the judge didn’t agree and the charges remain in tact.

“Body shaming is humiliating, with often painful, long-term consequences,” said Los Angeles City Attorney Mike Feuer after he announced his decision to prosecute last year on Nov. 4.
“It mocks and stigmatizes its victims, tearing down self-respect and perpetuating the harmful idea that our unique physical appearances should be compared to air-brushed notions of ‘perfect.’ What really matters is our character and humanity.”

Mathis later went on to delete her social media accounts and was banned from La Fitness, where the offense occurred. Her accounts have since been restored. Maybe she’ll think twice next time before she decides to share someone else’s privacy.
Her trial has been tentatively set to begin May 26, according to the judge presiding over the case.
