A 42-year-old Georgia state record for the largest Mako shark ever caught is no more.

The crew of the Vindicator Fishing Team hauled in a 440-pound shortfin Mako off the coast of Bryan County last week, obliterating the old record of 228 pounds set way back in 1975.

The captain of the boat that caught the monster, Dan Owsley, called it a once in a lifetime event.

“I’m very proud of my crew working together and being a part of this catch,” Owsley said. “It’s the second state record off my boat in two years and that’s pretty incredible.”

Owsley added that the crew caught a record 40 lb., 8 oz. blackfin tuna last year.
